Art... Beneath Pine Trees
At the beginning of the 20th century, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Pechstein and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff left the cities to work in the countryside. Through their paintings, drawings and prints, they celebrated the natural environment as a living force and the human body as a dynamic entity. A hundred years later, these artworks are being carefully preserved and exhibited, protected from all natural influences. To protect the holdings, museums ensure that the temperature and humidity in their galleries and stores remain constant, but such measures also lead to significant resource consumption.
How can a new relationship be forged between art and nature, between representation and reality? The Brücke-Museum is exploring this idea by creating a nature trail on its woodland site, encouraging visitors to observe, experience and learn from nature.
Wherein lies the beauty of vitality? What value does transience hold? And what happens during the cycle of the seasons?
Seven artists and collectives (Guerilla Architects, Mirja Busch, Club Real, El Conde de Torrefiel, Andreas Greiner, Jenny Kendler und Michael Meier & Christoph Franz) were invited to participate in this project by developing artworks that broaden our perspective on nature, explore the coexistence of all living beings, or artistically visualise processes of decay. During production, efforts were made to conserve resources and operate in a climate-neutral manner wherever possible. Unlike in a museum, the works are exposed to the elements; here, they are tended by bees and guarded by foxes.
The forest trail was created in collaboration with the landscape architects from atelier le balto, who are renowned for their artistic and ecologically sustainable approach. They create aesthetically appealing spaces for encounters and exchanges in nature. Since 2021, atelier le balto have been revitalising the Brücke-Museum site through a series of horticultural interventions in the entrance area, courtyard, garden and surrounding woodland. In July 2026, the woodland trail they created was extended to include the neighbouring Forestry Commission site.
The forest path is unpaved and not barrier-free – please note that you enter at your own risk.
At the same time inside the museum an exhibition focuses the central concern of the Brücke artists of rethinking the relationship between human beings and nature.

Note on Sustainability:
Not every resource needs to be new – sometimes it’s enough to rethink what already exists. This is the idea the designers at Büro Bum Bum followed for the current exhibitions, trialling a more sustainable exhibition practice: on the artistic trail, used mirrors serve as label elements instead of new material. The exhibition flyer was printed using the Riso process, an environmentally friendly printing technique using plant-based ink.
