From clay to space
Workshop for children and their accompanying adults, as well as families (GER/EN/ES)

In this hands-on workshop, participants learn through experimentation how various clay mixtures work. The workshop is based on the so-called Carazas Test, a participatory method of testing the stability of clay, water and fibre structures. Working in small groups, participants prepare various mixtures and apply each one to a grid. After a short drying period, the samples are compared: Which mixture crumbles? Which is stable? Which is easiest to build with? Through trial and error as well as discussion, the workshop conveys an understanding of and a feel for material properties.

No prior knowledge is necessary. Please bring suitable work clothes. Although the workshop will be mainly in German, we mention the languages spoken by the facilitators to make it more accessible. If you don’t feel confident in German, don’t worry — you can still take part.

Since its foundation in 1991, the non-profit association Lehmbaukontor Berlin/Brandenburg has been a driving force behind ecological construction, with a particular focus on building with earth. The association’s aim is to promote the diverse applications as well as the cultural and ecological significance of earth building, as well as to strengthen regional development in this field. Around 45 members, predominantly from the construction sector, form an open network of experts, initiatives and supporters. Lehmbaukontor sees itself not as a construction company, but as a platform for exchange, networking and the promotion of new businesses and projects in earth building. The association is also a member of the umbrella organisation Lehm e.V.

Sebastian Klocke works as a craftsman, specialising in timber and clay construction as well as energy-efficient refurbishment, and he is also a trainee timber engineer. His practice reflects a consistently ecological approach and combines craftsmanship with sustainable building methods.

Juana Joceline Acevedo Hülsbusch is a clay builder and documentary filmmaker with a master’s degree in architecture. She works with ecological building materials and explores locally rooted building cultures, as well as traditional forms of knowledge beyond Western-influenced building practices.
