Holiday workshop for children aged 8 to 12. With Karen Michelsen Castañón and Gudrun Ingratubun (visual artists)

What stories do works of art and plants tell? First, we’ll look at the works in the museum and the garden, in which nature plays a major role. Then we’ll explore the Grunewald together, observe the variety of shapes and textures, collect leaves, sketch, listen to the sounds of the trees and birds and learn about the ever-changing stories of this forest. Which painting, which sculpture, which plant appeals to you most? Using leaves from the plants in the Grunewald, you’ll create your own individual and collaborative eco-prints: you’ll press the plant leaves onto special paper using rust water and hot steam. This process imprints the fine details of the leaves and needles onto the paper. You’ll then work on your own ideas on paper using linocut printing.

No prior knowledge is necessary. Please bring suitable work clothes. Although the workshop will be mainly in German, we mention the languages spoken by the facilitators to make it more accessible. If you don’t feel confident in German, don’t worry — you can still take part.

Karen Michelsen Castañón (born in Lima, Peru) is a visual artist, filmmaker and freelance researcher. Her work deals with the way (colonial) histories are told and includes short films, photographs and textiles. She questions how hegemonic and invisible stories are re-staged in our daily lives and how this relates to current social events.

Gudrun Ingratubun (born 1969) studied agriculture and English and lived in Indonesia for a long time. Since returning to Berlin, she has been translating Indonesian literature into German. As an artist, she deals with social spaces, colonial structures, the climate crisis and collective mourning. Her botanical prints (Ecoprints) on paper and fabric, mixed media works and planted upcycling installations at documenta fifteen in Kassel and in Berlin-Charlottenburg invite dialogue and collective action at ear level. Her most recent works deal with the colonial histories of trees of the gods, indigo, za’atar, pines and olive trees.
