In their paintings, drawings and woodcuts, the Brücke artists celebrated the natural world. At the beginning of the 20th century, they left the cities to work directly in nature, seeking a new unity between humankind and the natural environment. This interest is reflected in the location and architecture of the museum dedicated to them, as the surrounding Grunewald forest was deliberately incorporated into Werner Düttmann’s design.

The Brücke-Museum’s current exhibition, Nature…In the Museum, showcases beloved and rarely seen works from its significant collection. Additionally, three contemporary artists offer new perspectives on the collection, the architecture and the wooded grounds. The artist Lizza May David engages in a painterly dialogue with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Violette Bäume (Purple Trees, 1914), while Alina Schmuch photographs the museum’s architecture in relation to the surrounding nature. Landscape architects atelier le balto, who revitalised the museum garden in recent years, have designed a wall for the exhibition, arranging Brücke works on it like a landscape.

 

Coinciding with the exhibition, the artistic and climate-neutral educational trail around the museum Art… Beneath Pine Trees will open in the garden, for which seven site-specific works by contemporary artists and collectives are being created.

Note on Sustainability:

For the current exhibitions the designers at Büro Bum Bum explored a more sustainable exhibition practice. The wall texts were written by hand on wooden panels from the previous exhibition and the paper-making workshop of the LebensWerkGemeinschaft transformed old leaflets into new handmade paper, which is used for the labels. Not every resource needs to be new; sometimes rethinking what already exists is enough.

The artistic nature trail was also designed with sustainability in mind. Here, second-hand mirrors serve as labels, and the exhibition booklet was printed using the Riso process. This is an environmentally friendly printing technique that uses plant-based inks.
