In Dialogue - Unlearn Painting

Two experts exchange their views on the central themes of the exhibition Swedish Modernism and connect them to current questions about art, research and society. With Ximena Ferrer Pizarro (artist) and Tanja-Bianca Schmidt (art educator and art historian)

Two experts will exchange their views on the central themes of the exhibition Swedish Modernism and connect them to current questions about art, research, and society. What stories do these paintings tell, and from whose perspectives? This guided tour invites visitors to question conventional ways of looking at painting. Together, we will explore the subjects, visual worlds, and painting styles of Swedish modernism. We will also examine the social expectations and power dynamics reflected in the paintings and consider how we can look at them differently today.

Ximena Ferrer Pizarro  (born in Lima, Perú) paints stories in which her characters fight for the visibility historically denied to them and their ancestors. With vulnerable yet sharp-witted directness, she challenges class structures, colonial power relations, and the marks they leave on bodies. Her work is edgy, offbeat, and funny.

Tanja-Bianca Schmidt studied art history in a global context. Her areas of focus are critiques of power, Black identity, and postcolonial theory. As a freelance political educator, she advises various museums in Germany on diversification and decolonisation strategies. Schmidt regularly organises workshops on discrimination-sensitive approaches in art history. She is currently completing her PhD in the DFG-funded research project “Image Protests on Social Media” at the TU Dresden (Dresden University of Technology).

We are committed to respectful interaction. Discriminatory behavior has no place at our events.
