Guided tour, Talk

in Dialogue - Self-Presentation

Two experts exchange their views on the central themes of the exhibition Swedish Modernism and connect them to current questions about art, research and society.   With Simon Schultz (cultural studies scholar and artist) and Thesea Rigou (art mediator and artist).

How much freedom do we have in how we present ourselves? The Swedish artist Nils Dardel was renowned for his extravagant lifestyle, experimenting with his image in both his art and everyday life. Taking Dardel as a starting point, this guided tour will explore how appearance and self-presentation can be forms of artistic expression, challenging social expectations around identity and gender in the process.

Simon Schultz is an artist and cultural studies scholar whose work explores representations of gender, activism and popular culture. Most recently, he developed a programme of drag tours for the Hamburger Kunsthalle, exploring the more extravagant aspects of the exhibitions alongside drag kings and queens. He lives and works in Hamburg.

Thesea Rigou Efstathopoulos (born in Cyprus) has been a freelance art mediator at the Brücke-Museum Berlin for over three years. Their artistic practice spans printmaking, ceramics, drawing, installation and participatory activities, often as part of the artist duo Helena & The Sea. Focusing on material cycles and socio-ecological kinship. Thesea approaches art mediation as an embodied, relational process that involves working with the body as much as with words.

We are committed to respectful interaction. Discriminatory behavior has no place at our events.
