Guided tour

Themed Tour

With Lisa Marei Schmidt (Director, Brücke-Museum) and Aya Soika (Professor of Art History, Bard College Berlin)

Around 1900, reform movements like that of the Lebensreform influenced contemporary thinking. In response to industrialisation and rigid bourgeois norms, they called for a recentring of nature, craftsmanship, and a simpler way of life. The Brücke artists adopted the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk – art that feeds into other aspects of life, from furniture and clothing to close engagement with nature. They designed their studios and living spaces with handmade furniture, textiles and wall paintings, creating expressive interiors that intentionally stood apart from conventional middle-class homes.

In this tour, the two curators Lisa Marei Schmidt and Aya Soika will outline the idea behind the exhibition together.
