Curators' Tour

In 1922, Lise Gujer (1893-1967) met the Brücke artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in the Swiss sanatorium of Davos. Shortly after meeting him, she began to produce large-format tapestries based on his designs, which inspired Kirchner as a “new way of painting”. The tapestries have often been attributed to Kirchner alone, without any reference to the weaver. However, Gujer’s contribution is never just a technical realization, but always has an artistic component as well.

The exhibition and its accompanying publication are being developed in close collaboration with the Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur. The goal of both exhibitions—in Chur and Berlin—is to shine a spotlight on Lise Gujer and bring her out of Kirchner’s shadow. This marks the first presentation in over 20 years dedicated to the work of the textile artist.

The directors of both museums and exhibitions provide insights into their joint work and the aim of showing Lisa Gujer as a textile artist in two very different art museums today.
