The Akademie der Künste with ARCH+: On Historic Preservation [German]

Discussion and tour with Winfried Brenne (architect), moderated by Luise Rellensmann (architectural critic/scholar)

As the person responsible for its general renovation ten years ago, Winfried Brenne knows the Akademie der Künste in the Hansaviertel like no one else. Planned by Werner Düttmann in collaboration with Sabine Schumann from 1958 to 1960, the three-part building ensemble comprises exhibition and event spaces as well as an administrative building and is particularly distinctive due to the thoughtful use of material and colour. The renovation work sought to bring these elements back to their original form, as they had been slightly obscured in places by wear and tear and minor interventions over the years. The upgrade to meet current technical and energetic standards also had to be carried out without affecting its original appearance. During this tour with Luise Rellensmann, Winfried Brenne will talk about the challenges of renovating listed buildings.

Winfried Brenne has been running his practice Brenne Architekten in Berlin since 1990. He has made a name for himself primarily through his expert handling of historical structures. The renovation of icons such as Walter Gropius’ Bauhaus in Dessau, Hans Scharoun’s Theater Wolfsburg and Bruno Taut’s Schillerpark housing estate in Berlin are just a few of his numerous projects. In 2007, Brenne was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his commitment to the preservation of historical monuments.

Luise Rellensmann is an author and academic associate in the department of historic preservation at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, where she is currently working on the research project ‘Denkmalpflege ohne Denkmalpfleger*innen? Theorien des Weiterbauens’.
