Around 1900, social gender roles determined who had access to art education. At the same time, there were clear ideas about which forms of expression were considered art. Women* were often directed towards areas such as textiles, ceramics, or illustration. Painting and sculpture, on the other hand, remained male-dominated – a pattern that was also very present at the Bauhaus. In this tour, we aim to question traditional assignments and conventions that continue to shape our understanding of material, medium, and authorship today. We will take textile works and other craft materials as our starting point.
