Swedish Modernism

Just like the Brücke group, young artists in Sweden in the early 20th century were also searching for new forms of expression, forming associations and turning their backs on the established art world. They found a common artistic language in Expressionism.

With the exhibition Swedish Modernism, the Brücke-Museum is exploring a chapter of the European avant-garde that is little known in Germany today. As early as 1915, the Berlin gallery Der Sturm, which was also closely associated with the Brücke artists, exhibited works by progressive Swedish artists, including Sigrid Hjertén and Isaac Grünewald. After more than a century, the Swedish Expressionists are now returning to Berlin.

The focus is on the Stockholm artist groups De unga (The Young Ones) and De åtta (The Eight), as well as the Gothenburg Colourists. Swedish Modernism highlights their shared artistic concerns, as well as the very individual paths taken by the various artists. Sigrid Hjertén is particularly worth discovering. In her vibrantly coloured paintings, she depicts life as a modern woman, artist, intellectual, and mother in all its complex facets.

The exhibition is a collaboration with the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Around 70 works from its collection are on display, most of which are being shown in Germany for the first time.

Swedish Modernism is held under the patronage of Her Excellency Veronika Wand-Danielsson, Swedish Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany.
