Artist Talk with Lizza May David

With Lizza May David (artist), moderated by Yvette Mutumba (art historian)

Which stories lie hidden within images? For the current exhibition, artist Lizza May David created a new work in dialogue with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Violette Bäume (Violet Trees, 1914). In conversation with art historian Yvette Mutumba, David discusses the creative process behind the painting, addressing issues of memory, visibility, and the traces of colonialism found in museum collections.

Lizza May David is a painter and multidisciplinary artist interested in gaps and silences in personal and collective archives and experiments with forms of activation or disturbance through abstract painting. David navigates through affects and moments that elude representability, leading to experimental approaches for the very same reason. David does not assume the existing binary simplifications of the world, but rather thinks relationally in crossroads, turning points, overlapping and branching out, finding further expression in collaborations, architectural interventions or installations.

Yvette Mutumba is co-founder and director of the Contemporary And (C&) platform. Since 2019, she has also been a lecturer at the Institute for Art in Context at the Berlin University of the Arts. From 2020 to 2024, she served as Curator-at-Large at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Yvette was a member of the curatorial team for the 10th Berlin Biennale and held a visiting professorship in Global Discourses at the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln (Academy of Media Arts in Cologne). From 2012 to 2016, she was a curator at the Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfurt am Main. As an author and editor, she has published numerous texts and books on contemporary art and art history. Yvette studied art history at the Freie Universität Berlin and completed her PhD at Birkbeck, University of London.
