Workshop: Reading Against the Grain. Discrimination Criticism in the Museum (DE)
For Multipliers in Education and Social Work with Karen Michelsen Castañón and Tanja-Bianca Schmidt

How can the artworks of the artist group Brücke be looked at in a new or different way and what do we learn from them?

With their expressive, colorful and contrasting paintings, the artists of the Brücke not only rebelled against the prevailing sense of taste and the strongly limiting taboos of the bourgeoisie at the beginning of the 20th century, but also contributed to consolidating exoticizing, sexualized and normative ideas of nature, body, society. In this workshop we will approach the art of the BRÜCKE group from a power-critical and discrimination-sensitive perspective. To this end, we will first trace our own positioning and reflect on it critically. Afterwards we will get to know and try out methods of critical image viewing. In the course of the workshop we will deal with the following questions:

From which positioning do I speak? What do I see? What ideas of foreignness, nudity, nature, role models, difference does the work convey? What (hurtful) effect does exhibiting this artwork have on you? To what extent does your experiential knowledge guide your perception? To what extent does a different attitude towards the work change your perception?

The workshop is process-oriented and is accompanied by various exercises and methods that use the participants’ experiential knowledge and self-observation as an important resource. The exercises will take place in individual work, in small groups and in plenary phases.
