André Jenö Raatzsch, born in Ilmenau in 1978, has participated in numerous international exhibitions in recent years, including the first Rom*nja Pavilion “Paradise Lost” at the Biennale di Venezia in Venice (Italy) in 2007.
Subsequently, he implemented several artistic and cultural projects, including “Rewritable Pictures”. In this studio work, participatory, artistic methods are used to question, expand and critically reflect on the pictorial representations of private picture archives of the Sinti*zze and Rom*nja. Raatzsch joined a PhD program at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest in 2015 on the transdisciplinary research topic “The Roma Image Studio”. The Roma Image Studio is an artistic-critical platform that combines the representation of European Sinti*zze and Rom*nja with the re- and deconstruction of Rom*nja identity, taking into account photography, photo archives and the related photographic discourse. André Raatzsch is head of the Documentation Department at the Documentation and Cultural Center of German Sinti and Roma in Heidelberg.
