Swedish Modernism

The Brücke-Museum presents the first comprehensive exhibition on Swedish modernism in Germany. Celebrated as ‘Swedish Expressionists’ at the Berliner Sturm gallery in 1915, the paintings and drawings of artists such as Sigrid Hjertén and Isaac Grünewald are known to only a few in Germany today. The exhibition aims to change this.

The presentation focuses on the artist groups De Unga [The Young], De åtta [The Eight] and the Göteborg Colourists. Like the Brücke artists, they also wanted to break away from entrenched academic traditions and pursue new artistic paths. The exhibition aims to illustrate the common aspirations of the groups as well as to explore the diverse and independent artistic developments of the participating artists.

Key works from the Moderna Museet collection in Stockholm are on display, as this is the second part of an important and forward-looking cooperation project in which the two museums are exchanging their collections. After the Brücke Museum’s collection was on display in Stockholm in 2024, the exhibition Swedish Modernism presents the second part and is thus able to show highlights from the Moderna Museet in Berlin for the first time.

The exhibition is a collaboration with Moderna Museet, Stockholm.

Swedish Modernism is organised under the patronage of Her Excellency Veronika Wand-Danielsson, Ambassador of Sweden to the Federal Republic of Germany.
