Under the Open Sky Into a World of Pleasure

Erich Heckel, Kinder am Ufer, 1912, Radierung, Brücke-Museum, © VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn 2023

For all the Brücke artists, nature remained an important site of work and inspiration. Here in Berlin, they regularly spent time in the countryside; the nearby Grunewald forest and the Grunewaldsee were a popular excursion destination for them. Since their time in Dresden, lakeside and water scenes had been important motifs for the group of artists. Erich Heckel also captured the activities at the Grunewaldsee in Berlin. The fact that the Brücke-Museum was built much later on the edge of the forest not far from the lake is no coincidence. It is a reflection of the great importance nature held for the group.
